Students from the EU Member States have submitted way fewer applications in the British higher education institutions in the 2020/2021 period, the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS) has pointed out.

According to a press release issued by UCAS, 31,670 students from the EU applied during this time, with 16,025 getting accepted – 50 per cent less than in the pre-Brexit period.

He also told the BBC that EU applications at the University of Bristol decreased by 42 per cent in 2021 and enrolments by 39 per cent.

However, local media previously reported that the tuition fees at British universities had surged significantly, especially compared to pre-Brexit, when EU and British nationals, equally, had to pay around €11,083 (£9,250) per year.

Since last August, tuition fees have surged drastically, with some universities charging up to £40,000, which is equivalent to €47,927 – far more expensive than any European higher education provider’s tuition fees.

SchengenVisaInfo.com previously reported that the number of EU students, especially those from Hungary, have been affected by the post-Brexit tuition fees in the UK.

More specifically, British universities are charging about 170 per cent more than in 2020 when the country was still an EU Member State, raising their prices from (€11,095) to about £25,000 to £40,000 (€ 29,990-47,985), in addition to other requirements related to visa application which add another €348.

Moreover, Hungarian students are required to pay an extra €564 to the Immigration Health Surcharge, on top of high living costs in the UK.

“There has been a dramatic fall in the number of students studying in the UK. While in the year 2020-2021, around 705 students were accepted out of around 1,100 applicants, in the 2021-2022 academic year, only 450 students applied out of which 190 have been accepted, but eventually only 60 began their studies,” Soma Pirityi, co-director of the Hungarian Youth Association told Napi.hu.

However, the demand for British universities remains high among international students as the country is a top destination for those wanting to pursue an academic career. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022, which counts more than 1,600 universities from 99 countries, the University of Oxford in England is ranked first, with 24,515 enrolled students.
